Moppity Vineyards

From humble beginnings in 2004 Moppity Vineyards is rapidly becoming one of Australia's most successful wine companies. Their first release - the 2006 Reserve Shiraz - took out Top Gold at the 2008 London International Wine & Spirit Competition. Since then, Moppity Vineyards has enjoyed incredible show success, winning over 220 trophies and medals, picking up some of the world's most coveted wine prizes along the way. The flagship Reserve Shiraz was listed in Australia's Top 10 Shiraz in 2012, beating Penfolds Grange and equal with Henschke Hill of Grace, both $600 wines.

Moppity Vineyards source their grapes from multiple regions including Tumbarumba and the Hilltops area.

The coldest viticultural region on mainland Australia, Tumbarumba is located 504km south west of Sydney at the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, home to Australia’s highest peak, Mt Kosciuszko  The alpine climate is perfect for producing both ultra-premium sparkling and table wines.

The vineyards in the region vary in elevations from 500 – 820 metres, rich soil types characterized by decomposed granite, basalt and shale loams are all seen to contribute to the distinct varietal characters. The region shows an average rainfall of 1000mm, with warm days and cool nights. The two main varieties grown in Tumbarumba are Chardonnay and Pinot noir, both for sparkling and table wines, there are some small plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Pinot Meunier, Shiraz and Merlot.

The Hilltops Wine Region is one of New South Wales' most exciting wine regions. Situated in the Murray-Darling Basin around the towns of Young, Boorowa and Harden, the Hilltops is fast gaining recognition as a consistent producer of ultra-premium wine.  Consequently it has attracted the attention of leading winemakers from other regions.

Vineyards are found at altitudes of 450m to 600m above sea level, contributing to the high diurnal temperature range. The rich terra rossa soils of the region are another important factor enhancing the quality of the Hilltops wines.

The vineyard is situated on dark red volcanic granitic clays, impregnated with basalt. We have 170 acres under vine spread over 450 acres of undulating terrain. Plantings include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Nebbiolo, Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon and Viognier.
